A Stage 1 ECU remap recalibrates that software. We read the existing map from your ECU, develop a revised calibration that optimises fuel injection timing, boost pressure, torque limits and throttle response — then write the new map back. The result is a vehicle that delivers noticeably more power and torque, responds better to your throttle input, and in many cases uses fuel more efficiently too.

It's the single most cost-effective performance upgrade available for a modern diesel or petrol vehicle. And for a van owner who drives loaded every single day, the difference isn't academic — you feel it every time you pull out of a junction or climb a motorway slip road.

Stage 1 is carried out on a standard, unmodified vehicle. No supporting hardware modifications are required. It's designed to work within the safe limits of your standard engine and drivetrain, and every remap we produce is developed using professional-grade software — not generic files uploaded without thought.

    • ECU write and verification — the new map is written and checked before you leave.
    • Post-remap test — we verify everything is running correctly and check for fault codes after installation.

Your Stage 1 Remap Appointment — Step by Step

    1

    Arrive at Barlborough Links

Our workshop is at Unit 4, Networkcentre, Barlborough Links, S43 4WW — just off the A619 near Junction 30 of the M1. Parking is free and easy. We'll be expecting you.

    2

    Vehicle Health Check (10–15 mins)

Before we connect anything, we run your vehicle through our diagnostic equipment. We check for existing fault codes, look at live engine data, and confirm your vehicle is suitable and healthy enough for remapping. If there's anything we're not happy with, we'll tell you upfront — not partway through the job.

    3

    ECU Read (15–20 mins)

We connect to your vehicle's OBD port using professional-grade Alientech equipment and read the current ECU calibration. This is your vehicle's current 'factory map' — the starting point we'll be working from.

    4

    Map Calibration

Using the ECU data from your specific vehicle combined with our technical knowledge, we develop your custom calibration. This stage adjusts fuel injection timing, boost pressure, torque limiter values and throttle response curves — all tuned to deliver the best possible results within safe operating limits.

    5

ECU Write & Verification (10–15 mins)

The revised map is written back to your ECU. We then verify the write was successful and run a further diagnostic check to confirm no fault codes are present.

    6

    Collect and Drive

That's it. Your vehicle is ready. Total time from arrival to collection: 45–60 minutes for most vehicles. We'll take you through the key changes and what to expect on the drive home.

"Most customers tell us they can feel the difference before they've left the car park."

Who Books a Stage 1 Remap at Concept-R?

    The Tradesperson

You drive every day. Your van is your business. It's loaded with tools and it needs to pull properly — especially on motorway slip roads and dual carriageways. A Stage 1 remap gives you noticeably more torque, better throttle response and real-world MPG improvements that add up over thousands of miles.

Most popular: Ford Transit Custom, VW Transporter, Mercedes Vito

    The Daily Driver

You've owned the car a year or two and it's always felt like it could give more. It's capable — but the factory software holds it back. A Stage 1 remap unlocks what your manufacturer left on the table. More power, sharper response, better motorway cruising.

Most popular: BMW 3 Series, VW Golf TDI, Audi A4, Ford Focus

    The Fleet Operator

You run multiple vans and fuel costs are eating into your margins. A fuel economy remap — or a Stage 1 oriented toward economy rather than outright power — across your fleet can generate meaningful annual savings. Talk to us about fleet rates.

I recently took my 2013 Kia Sportage 1.7 to Concept-R for a Stage 1 remap. The outcome has been excellent. There is a clear and immediate improvement in power delivery and overall responsiveness — and over 100 extra miles per tank.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Will a Stage 1 remap void my car's warranty?+
This is the most common question we receive — and the honest answer is: it depends on your warranty type and your manufacturer. If your vehicle is still under a manufacturer's warranty, the dealer could technically refuse a warranty claim on components they believe were affected by the remap. However, the majority of drivetrain warranty claims for well-mapped vehicles are approved without issue, because a professionally developed Stage 1 calibration operates within safe limits. If your vehicle is under an extended or third-party warranty, you should check the terms. We're always happy to advise based on your specific situation.
Is a Stage 1 remap safe for my engine?+
Yes — when carried out correctly by a qualified specialist. A professional Stage 1 calibration is developed to increase performance while remaining within the safe operating limits of your engine, fuel system, turbo and gearbox. At Concept-R, we run a full pre-remap diagnostic check on every vehicle. If we find anything that concerns us — excessive wear, fault codes, oil issues — we'll tell you before we start. We don't remap vehicles we're not confident in. Our lifetime warranty and money-back guarantee are the real proof: we wouldn't offer them if we weren't 100% confident in the quality and safety of our work.
How long does a Stage 1 remap take?+
From arrival to departure, most Stage 1 remaps are completed in 45–60 minutes. This includes our pre-remap diagnostic check, ECU read, calibration, write-back, and post-remap verification. You don't need to leave the vehicle all day — most customers wait in our comfortable reception area and are back on the road within the hour.
What power gains will I actually feel?+
On a modern turbodiesel, typical Stage 1 gains are in the region of 20–50 bhp and 40–100 Nm of additional torque — the exact figures depend on your vehicle, its condition, and its ECU type. The most commonly reported 'feeling' from our customers is improved throttle response and mid-range torque — the car or van pulls more willingly, requires fewer gear changes, and overtaking becomes more confident.
Will a Stage 1 remap improve my fuel economy?+
In most cases, yes. By optimising fuel injection timing and improving torque delivery at lower RPM, a Stage 1 remap reduces the amount of throttle input required to maintain speed. Many customers report 10–20% improvements in real-world MPG — particularly on motorway and mixed driving. Van drivers who are regularly loaded see the most dramatic improvements because the engine doesn't have to work as hard under load.
Do I need to tell my insurance company?+
Yes. All ECU remapping should be declared to your insurance provider as a vehicle modification. Most insurers will note the modification without significantly increasing your premium — particularly for Stage 1 work. Failure to declare a remap could invalidate your insurance in the event of a claim.
Can you remap my petrol car, or is it only for diesels?+
We remap both petrol and diesel vehicles. Modern turbocharged petrol engines respond very well to Stage 1 remapping — VW/Audi 2.0 TSI, BMW B48/B58, Ford EcoBoost and similar platforms all deliver excellent results. Naturally aspirated petrol engines can also be remapped, though gains are typically more modest.
What happens if a dealer overwrites my remap during a service?+
This is exactly what our lifetime software warranty covers. If a main dealer or independent garage carries out a software update that overwrites your remap, bring the vehicle back to us and we'll reinstall it at no charge. This warranty lasts for the lifetime of the vehicle while you own it.
