Where a performance Stage 1 remap pushes towards more power, a fuel economy remap calibrates the ECU to use fuel more efficiently, optimise injection timing, smooth torque delivery across the rev range, and reduce the aggressive demand on fuel that can come with factory calibrations.

The result is a vehicle that is more economical to run — particularly on motorway and mixed driving — while also feeling noticeably smoother and more composed.

What Could a Fuel Economy Remap Save You?

A fuel economy remap doesn't just feel different — it saves you real money. Here's what that looks like in practice based on typical customer driving profiles.

    The Tradesperson (25,000 miles/year)

    Ford Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue 130ps · Typical MPG: 35 · Post-remap MPG: 40–42 (+14%) · Annual saving: ~£350–400 · Remap cost: £250 · Break-even: Under 9 months

    The Daily Driver (15,000 miles/year)

    BMW 320d 190ps · Typical MPG: 45 · Post-remap MPG: 50–53 (+12%) · Annual saving: ~£175–220 · Remap cost: £250 · Break-even: 12–18 months

    The Fleet Operator (5 vans × 30,000 miles/year)

    Total annual fuel cost: ~£17,500 · Post-remap saving: 12–18% · Annual saving: ~£2,100–3,150 · Remap cost (5 vans): £1,250 · Break-even: Under 6 months

Savings are estimates based on representative driving profiles and fuel costs. Actual savings depend on driving style, vehicle condition, routes driven and fuel price.

Economy Remap vs Performance Remap — Do You Have to Choose?

One of the most common questions we receive. The short answer: not entirely.

Both a Stage 1 performance remap and a fuel economy remap adjust the same ECU parameters — fuel injection timing, boost pressure, torque curves and throttle response. The difference lies in how those parameters are balanced.

A PERFORMANCE-ORIENTED REMAP maximises power and torque output, optimising for the sharpest throttle response and peak power delivery. Economy improves as a secondary benefit because the engine is more efficient, but the calibration prioritises performance feel.

AN ECONOMY-ORIENTED REMAP optimises for maximum thermal efficiency — the point at which fuel energy is converted to usable power most effectively. Boost pressure is calibrated for economy at cruise speeds. The result is noticeably better MPG figures, with a secondary benefit of improved torque at low RPM.

THE HONEST TRUTH: Many customers who book an economy remap end up with both better economy AND better drivability. The most efficient engine operating point also tends to produce the most torque — which is exactly what van drivers need at loaded highway speeds.

Tell us your priorities and we'll calibrate accordingly. We can also discuss what's realistic for your specific vehicle.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Will a fuel economy remap affect performance?+
A fuel economy remap is calibrated with efficiency as the primary goal. Performance gains are typically modest compared to a Stage 1 performance remap — the focus is on smoother, more efficient power delivery rather than maximum power output. If you want both improved economy AND more performance, a Stage 1 remap often delivers both.
How much money could I realistically save?+
It depends on your mileage, vehicle, fuel type and driving conditions. As a rough guide: a 15% MPG improvement on a diesel van doing 30,000 miles per year at £1.55 per litre of diesel could save £400–£600 per year. The remap typically pays for itself within 6–12 months for high-mileage drivers.
Is a fuel economy remap available for petrol vehicles?+
Yes, though fuel economy remaps typically deliver stronger MPG gains on diesel vehicles than petrol. Contact us with your petrol vehicle details and we'll give you an honest assessment of the likely gains for your specific car.
Can I combine a fuel economy remap with a performance Stage 1 remap?+
A standard Stage 1 remap already incorporates fuel efficiency improvements alongside performance gains — many customers report better MPG alongside more power. If your primary goal is economy rather than performance, a dedicated fuel economy remap is the more targeted approach.
