How the Autowatch Ghost Immobiliser Works
The Autowatch Ghost II is not a traditional immobiliser. It doesn't have a key fob. It doesn't have an LED light that tells a thief where it's hidden. It uses technology that renders keyless entry relay attacks, key cloning and OBD port hacking completely useless.
Hidden Installation
The Ghost is installed covertly within the vehicle's CAN bus network — the communication system that connects all modern vehicle electronics. There's no visible hardware. No wires on show. No indicator light that gives away its location. A professional thief won't know it's there.
PIN Code Required
A unique PIN sequence is programmed by you during installation — using buttons already present on your vehicle (steering wheel controls, door switches, dashboard buttons). Without entering this sequence correctly, the engine will not start. Full stop.
Key Cloning Doesn't Work
Thieves using relay boxes to amplify your key signal or clone your key signal gain nothing. Even with a perfect copy of your key, the engine will not start without the correct PIN. The Ghost makes key data irrelevant.
Immovable Without Your PIN
The vehicle goes into a secure mode if tampered with. If towed, the Ghost records the event. The only way to move the vehicle is with the correct PIN — which only you know.

Relay Attack
A thief stands outside your house with a signal amplifier. An accomplice stands near your front door. The device amplifies your key signal through your wall, fools the car into thinking you're present, and the door opens. The engine starts. They drive away. Time taken: under 60 seconds.
Key Cloning
Using OBD port programmers available for under £300, thieves can reprogram a blank key fob to work with your vehicle. Often done during a 'bump' or distraction in a car park. Time taken: 2–3 minutes if they have OBD access.
OBD Port Attack
A thief breaks into your vehicle (sometimes by smashing a window), connects a device to your OBD port under the dashboard, and programs a new key. This method is increasingly common on high-value vehicles. Ghost protection means even with OBD access, they cannot programme a key that starts the engine without the PIN.

Will the Ghost affect how my car drives or functions normally?+
No. Once you've entered your PIN correctly, your vehicle functions exactly as it did before — the Ghost is completely transparent in normal use. You enter your PIN as part of your routine (typically a short sequence using existing buttons — steering wheel controls, hazard button, etc.) and the vehicle starts normally. It becomes second nature within a few days.
What happens if I forget my PIN?+
We provide you with a unique Autowatch emergency code card during installation. This allows you to request a temporary override code from Autowatch's 24/7 support line. We also encourage all customers to ensure their partner or any regular drivers of the vehicle know the PIN.
Can the Ghost be found and removed by a thief?+
In theory, any device can be removed if someone has enough time, knowledge and determination. However, the Ghost is installed covertly within the CAN bus network and is significantly harder to locate than traditional immobilisers. Additionally, even if a thief finds and removes the Ghost, they still cannot start the vehicle without the correct key AND programming a new key is still blocked by the ECU.
Does Autowatch Ghost reduce my insurance premium?+
Many insurers recognise the Autowatch Ghost and offer premium reductions. Thatcham category ratings apply to the Ghost, and it's worth calling your insurer to ask specifically. The one-time cost of £449 is commonly recovered within 1–3 years of insurance savings, on top of the security benefit.
How long does installation take?+
Most Autowatch Ghost installations are completed in 2–3 hours. Your vehicle needs to be booked in for a half-day appointment. We'll contact you on completion and walk you through the PIN setup process before you collect.
Is the installation registered anywhere?+
Yes. All our Ghost installations are registered with Autowatch's national database. This provides an additional layer of protection and authenticity, and means any future issues with the device can be resolved through official Autowatch channels.
Will it work on my Ford Transit Custom?+
Yes — the Transit Custom is one of the most common vehicles we install the Ghost into, and it's highly recommended given the high theft risk for commercial vans. If you're having your Transit remapped at the same time, we can discuss combining both services into a single visit.
What's the difference between Ghost and a standard immobiliser?+
A standard OEM immobiliser works by communicating with your key — if the key signal matches, the immobiliser releases. Thieves bypass this by either cloning your key signal (relay attack) or programming a new key via the OBD port. The Ghost adds a completely independent layer — your PIN — that has nothing to do with key data. Even with a perfect copy of your key, the engine will not start without the PIN.
