The diesel particulate filter is a component in the exhaust system of most modern diesel vehicles, designed to capture and trap soot particles from the exhaust gases. Under normal driving conditions, the DPF periodically regenerates — burning off the accumulated soot at high temperatures during extended motorway driving.

Every modern diesel vehicle made after 2009 has a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) fitted as standard. It's a piece of emissions legislation — not an optional extra — and when it blocks, it will affect your vehicle's performance, trigger warning lights, and eventually put your vehicle into limp mode or cause it to refuse to start.
Your DPF captures soot particles from your exhaust gases. During normal motorway driving at sustained speeds, the filter regenerates — it burns off the accumulated soot at high temperature. This is called active regeneration, and it happens automatically.
Short journeys, urban driving, and stop-start traffic don't allow the DPF to reach regeneration temperatures. Over time, soot accumulates faster than it's being burned. Your vehicle's computer detects a partial blockage and may illuminate a warning light. At this stage, the filter is still cleanable.
If ignored, the DPF reaches a point where it can no longer regenerate effectively. Your vehicle enters limp mode to protect the engine. In severe cases, the DPF becomes permanently damaged — and requires replacement at a cost of £1,000–£3,000+ depending on vehicle.
