Why Are There Different Stages?
The 'stage' system in ECU remapping is not a manufacturer standard or a legal definition. It's a widely used industry shorthand to describe the relationship between a vehicle's hardware modifications and its ECU calibration.
The core principle is simple: the ECU software must be appropriate for the hardware. Matching the right calibration to the right hardware specification is the foundation of professional remapping.
Stage 1 — The Entry Point
What it is: A software-only recalibration for a standard, unmodified vehicle. No hardware changes required.
What it delivers: Stage 1 optimises the ECU parameters within the safe limits of the factory engine and drivetrain. Improved power, torque, throttle response, and often improved fuel economy.
Who it's for: Drivers whose vehicles are in standard specification, tradespeople wanting better van performance, car owners wanting better everyday drivability, anyone wanting to 'unlock' the performance headroom built into the factory calibration.
Typical gains (diesel, turbocharged): Power +15–40 bhp, Torque +40–80 Nm, Throttle response noticeably sharper, Fuel economy +10–20% in real-world conditions.
The bottom line: Stage 1 is the right choice for 90% of people asking about remapping.
Stage 2 — For Modified Vehicles
What it is: A recalibration developed specifically for vehicles with supporting hardware modifications already fitted.
What it delivers: Stage 2 calibrations go beyond what Stage 1 can safely achieve on standard hardware. With the right modifications in place, Stage 2 produces significantly larger gains in power and torque.
What you need (typically): For diesel vehicles: upgraded air intake, decat downpipe or high-flow sports cat, uprated intercooler. For petrol vehicles: panel filter or induction kit, decat or sports cat, intercooler (on turbocharged petrols).
An important note: Stage 2 without supporting mods is either unachievable or inadvisable.
Typical gains (diesel, turbocharged, with supporting mods): Power +40–80+ bhp, Torque +80–150+ Nm.
Stage 3 — Maximum Performance
What it is: The highest level of ECU tuning, developed for heavily modified vehicles with significant hardware upgrades.
Who it's for: Serious performance builds with uprated turbos, fuelling, internals, and drivetrain components. Track cars and high-performance road builds.
What you need: Uprated turbocharger, upgraded fuel injectors and high-pressure fuel pump, full decat exhaust, uprated intercooler, uprated clutch (essential), and often uprated drivetrain components.
The bottom line: Stage 3 is not for daily drivers. If you're asking whether Stage 3 is right for you, it probably isn't yet. Talk to us.
The Stage Comparison
Stage 1: Standard vehicle, no hardware required, +15–40 bhp, ideal for everyday use, from £250, right for most drivers.
Stage 2: Modified vehicle, intake/cat/intercooler required, +40–80 bhp, yes for everyday use, from £350, sometimes right.
Stage 3: Heavily modified, turbo/fuelling/internals required, highly variable gains, not typically for everyday use, POA, rarely right.
Can I Start at Stage 1 and Move Up Later?
Yes. This is actually a very sensible approach. Many of our Stage 2 customers started with a Stage 1 remap. The Stage 1 was their first experience of what remapping could deliver — and it gave them the appetite for more. Over time, they added hardware modifications, came back to us, and moved to Stage 2.
Stage 1 does not prevent Stage 2. When the time comes to upgrade, we update your calibration for your new specification.
