The problem is that EGR valves operate in an extremely hostile environment. They're exposed to hot, sooty exhaust gases on one side and relatively cool intake air on the other. Over time — particularly on vehicles used predominantly for short journeys — carbon deposits accumulate on the EGR valve, the EGR cooler, and the intake manifold. Eventually, the valve sticks open or closed, or fails to operate correctly, triggering fault codes and warning lights.

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is an emissions control device fitted to virtually all modern diesel (and many petrol) engines. It recirculates a portion of exhaust gases back into the intake to reduce combustion temperatures and NOx emissions. It's also one of the most commonly problematic components on modern diesel engines.
Over time and mileage, exhaust gases deposit carbon build-up on the EGR valve, actuator and associated pipework.
