The Ford Transit Custom and the SID212 ECU

The Ford Transit Custom is the UK's most popular light commercial vehicle. Most Transit Custom models equipped with the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine — which covers the majority of Transit Customs built from 2018 onwards — use the Continental SID212 ECU as their engine management system.

The SID212 manages the engine conservatively — particularly when the van is under load. If you've driven your Transit Custom fully loaded and felt it struggle to pull, or noticed how lifeless the throttle feels when you need response, that's the factory SID212 calibration doing exactly what Ford intended.

The good news is that this can be changed. The complication is that the SID212 is significantly more complex to remap than most other ECUs.

Why the SID212 Is Different to Remap

Standard ECU remapping involves connecting to the vehicle's OBD port, reading the software, modifying it, and writing the new calibration back. The SID212 doesn't allow this. It uses a security protocol that locks the ECU against standard OBD read/write procedures.

For most tuning companies, this means: 1. Vehicle arrives at the workshop 2. Technician removes the SID212 ECU from the vehicle 3. ECU is sent to a specialist facility for unlocking — this takes several days 4. Unlocked ECU is returned 5. Tuning is performed 6. ECU is refitted

During steps 3–4, your van is sitting off the road. For most tradespeople, this is unacceptable.

What Does the SID212 Remap Actually Deliver?

Power: A significant bhp increase over the factory figure.

Throttle response: The factory SID212 calibration has a notable hesitation built into the throttle response. After the remap, the van responds immediately.
